I was mostly brought up in southern California; but didn’t own a car until halfway through college. Yep, L.A. and no car. So, I rode bicycles to get around and worked in a bike shop through high school. I might be the only person who has ridden a bike on the 405 south freeway in L.A. due to a detour and a closed road. I guess they never considered the concept of anything but cars back then.
Back to art. I started drawing after taking a drafting class in Jr. High, but didn’t have any art classes until later during college. In High School I focused on either technical projects outside of classes or photography, taking a couple of photography classes.
My first exposure to the Sacramento area was at U.C. Davis. I majored in Engineering, but also took art classes and considered adding Studio Art as a double major; but dropped adding art as it would delay my graduation by a couple of quarters. I had been an undergrad for five years and was already accepted to graduate school with fellowships.
After graduate school I focused on a successful engineering and science career, ending up in the Seattle Washington area for the last twenty-five years of work. I was able to chart a lot of my own course and had many design and creative opportunities at work during my career. By 2016, several years before retiring I was moving back to fine arts before quitting full time work.
From Seattle, I moved down to the Sacramento area in 2020 and art has been a significant part of my life since. My primary focus has been on watercolor, pencil/ink and more recently oil. As a member of NCA, I’ve found a great group of artists that inspire me and are just great to be around.
