JUROR: Cheryl Gleason graduated from UC Davis in 1997 with a degree in Fine Art and a minor in Art History.  During her time at UC Davis, she was inspired and mentored by David Hollowell, Squeek Carnwath, Ana Beth Rosen and Wayne Thiebaud. Primarily working in oil painting for years, after college Gleason started working in other mediums like encaustic, acrylic, oil and cold wax, and reclaimed wood sculptures.
Starting in 2020, Gleason has devoted studio time to explore abstract art. “Playful beginning of lines, colors and shapes is how all my art starts no matter the medium.” Through a process of “play”, mark-making, color and shape start the process. “Exploring” and taking risks is critical during the early stages of a piece. “Clarifying” through additive and subtractive methods help to define areas of interest. Harmony is important and is achieved through a limited pallet, and color mixing. “What comes out in the end has relevance from my life’s experience”.

Currently Gleason is the Art Director/Curator of the Mills Station Arts & Culture Center (the MACC) in Rancho
Cordova, California. Five years as the Art Director and creator of the MACC has taught her much about her own art, as well as creating a place where all communities are welcome.
